Screen-free indoor activities for kids at home
Practical indoor play ideas for evenings, rainy days and holidays: puzzles, logic games, magnetic boards and active play, sorted by age.
Evenings, rainy days and long holidays can easily turn into screen time. The trick is to have a few engaging activities ready, and to change them often enough that they still feel new.
Ideas for toddlers (1–3 years)
- Shape sorters and stacking toys, like the 35-piece wooden shape matching game.
- Chunky wooden puzzles with a few pieces.
- Picture books read together, with lots of pointing and naming.
- A little active play: a rocker, a low slide or a push ride-on.
Ideas for pre-schoolers (3–5 years)
- Magnetic boards, such as the magnetic colour counting maze, which practise colours and counting.
- Matching and memory games, and simple board games for small hands.
- Progressive jigsaw puzzles that grow harder as your child improves.
Ideas for older children (6 and up)
- Logic and strategy puzzles like Mind Challenge.
- Magnetic building puzzles, like the Play Panda Magnetic Puzzle Combo.
- Word and strategy board games for family game night. See our guide to board games on rent.
- Big puzzles with 100 pieces or more, such as map and solar-system puzzles.
Keep it fresh with rotation
Children lose interest in toys they see every day. Keep only a few activities out at a time and swap them every week or two. Renting makes rotation easy: you get new toys regularly without adding to the clutter. Read our toy rotation ideas for a small home.
Workshops and camps
For holidays, Pustak Pitara also runs kids workshops, summer camps and DIY activities. See workshops, camps and DIY for current programmes.
